Mayan Ruins
Explore the wonders of the ancient Maya civilization while in Belize. Mayan occupation began perhaps as early as 2000 B.C. and started to decline in 900 A.D. It's believed that at one time there were over 1 million Mayan's living in Belize.
Where did they all go? Ancient Ruins that rival and surpass the Pyramids of Egypt! The picture is of Xunantunich "Maiden of the Rock" a major ceremonial center in the Cayo District. The largest pyramid is called "El Castillo". It was built during the 'Classic' Mayan era (250BC to 900AD).
Xunantunich - Western Belize: US $120.00 per person.
Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit - Belize includes Lunch: US $110.00
The Green Parrot offers wonderful land based tours to Mayan ruins that are within a day's travel. We recommend that you read the August 2007 National Geographic Magazine, wherein you will find an article entitled: "Maya - How a Great Culture Rose and Fell". This article contains a good map of Mesoamerica - which will be posted at the Green Parrot. This recent National Geographic article highlights the rise and fall of the Maya civilization. As an example, the Peten province in Guatemala currently has a population of about 367,000. In the eighth century, some estimates are that as many as 10 million persons lived in the province.
What caused the decline? The answer, while not known for certain, appears to lie in a number of factors: droughts, deforestation and overuse of land, a top heavy social structure, over taxation of the population, and rivalries among the various tribes all added to the downfall.
Come and visit the remains of this once great culture - the Green Parrot will be glad to make the experience memorable for you.
